Diablo IV
Fields of Hatred remain the only PvP loop. Each season's class balance reshapes the duel meta; the rest of the population stays PvE-focused.
Diablo IV's PvP lives in the Fields of Hatred zones: opt-in flagged open-world combat over Seeds of Hatred resources. No structured ranked ladder, but the zones are alive every season.

Diablo IV launched in 2023 with PvP scoped to the Fields of Hatred zones, two open-world areas (one in the desert south, one in the icy north) where players can flag for PvP, hunt each other for Seeds of Hatred, and complete the cleansing ritual at the altars to convert seeds into Red Dust currency.
The design is opt-in and zone-bounded, which sidesteps most of the ARPG PvP balance problem (the rest of the world remains PvE). The seasonal patch cadence reshuffles class balance every quarter, which keeps the duel meta fresh even though the audience is dwarfed by the PvE side. There is no structured ranked ladder; competition is entirely informal within the zones.
Diablo IV's PvP scope is deliberate: Blizzard learned from D3 that structured PvP requires investment they did not want to commit to again, and the Fields of Hatred design contains the PvP audience without requiring the rest of the game to balance around it.
