Final Fantasy XI is one of the most successful MMOs of the early 2000s, anchored by the long subscription tail that Square Enix's audience commitment supported. The PvP layer was always secondary to the PvE story and raid content, but Ballista and the later Brenner format developed a cult following with mechanics that rewarded careful job composition and resource management. The PvP audience was small. The audience that did show up has stayed loyal across more than two decades of operation.
