For Honor launched in 2017 from Ubisoft Montreal with a fighting-game-meets-3D-melee design. The Art of Battle directional defense system (three guard stances, light and heavy attacks, parries, deflects, throws, ganks) gave the title a real fighting-game depth that is unusual for AAA action games.

The 1v1 duel scene is the competitive centerpiece, with players running matchmade and tournament ladders for hero-vs-hero matchups. Dominion runs as the casual 4v4 objective mode that drives most of the player population. The Faction War metalayer (Knights, Vikings, Samurai, Wu Lin, Outlanders) overlays seasonal territory contests on top of every match.

Pro scene was active 2017 to 2020 with a real circuit; current scene is community-tournament-driven with the developer maintaining the matchmaking infrastructure.
