Heroes of Newerth launched in 2010 as the most faithful PC port of the original Dota mod's design language at the time. The game competed directly with League of Legends in the early MOBA boom, lost the audience battle but retained a hardcore community that valued HoN's unforgiving design. S2 Games sold the IP in 2015. The official live service shut in 2022. Project HoN, a community-led revival, has continued operating since.
