Star Wars Galaxies is the most ambitious sandbox MMO most modern players have never experienced. The Galactic Civil War PvP system, the faction infrastructure, the player city mechanics, and the original profession-based skill system created a sandbox that rewarded specialization and political organization. The 2005 New Game Enhancements (NGE) patch broke the audience that had built the game's culture and is one of the most cited examples in MMO history of a single update destroying a community. The game sunset in 2011. Emulator servers continue to operate, and the original audience still talks about the pre-NGE era as a high-water mark for the genre.
