Team Fortress 2 launched in 2007 as part of the Orange Box and went free-to-play in 2011. The class-based design (nine classes, asymmetric kits, defined roles) is the direct predecessor to the modern hero shooter format that Overwatch later popularized. The competitive six versus six and Highlander scenes have run for over a decade on community-organized infrastructure (ETF2L, RGL, Highlander leagues), surviving Valve's almost-complete neglect of the mode.
