Tribes 2

also known as T2, Starsiege Tribes 2

Tribes 2 codified skiing, the jetpack movement system, and the large-team CTF format that subsequent shooters have been re-deriving for two decades. The mechanical ceiling was extreme. The audience that played seriously remembers it as the high point of the genre.

Tribes 2 is the canonical entry in the Tribes series and the most influential large-team movement shooter ever shipped. Skiing (the friction-cancellation movement technique) and jetpack flight created a 3D movement system whose mechanical ceiling has never been exceeded. The 32-player CTF format with vehicle support, base assets, and large-scale coordination requirements set design templates that Battlefield, Planetside, and modern combined-arms shooters have all reached back to. The competitive scene has been dormant for years, but the genre's debt to Tribes 2 is permanent.
