Unreal Tournament shipped in 1999 as the direct counterweight to Quake III Arena, and the rivalry between the two defined the arena FPS competitive scene at the turn of the century. UT2004's Onslaught mode prefigured large-scale combined-arms shooters, the Assault mode set design templates that subsequent games inherited, and the mod scene produced influential community work that fed directly into what later became staple FPS mechanics. The franchise has been dormant since the 2014 reboot stalled.
