Field notes: the lonely shifts

Some servers had a tempo that only made sense at three in the morning. There were rooms in those games that nobody was supposed to find, and a few of us did anyway.

Arwic at three in the morning was the loneliest place in the world. I ran through it more nights than I can count. The mercenaries never slept, and they never followed me far. They knew the value of staying home.

The pattern of who was online at four AM server time was its own kind of map. Easterners on a Western server. Insomniacs. People with night shift jobs. A handful of foreign traders who had built whole spreadsheets on whose loot table refreshed during their lunch break. You learned to recognize them by handle alone. You did not ask why they were there. They did not ask why you were.

There was a sandstone room near the western desert that nobody talked about. The graphics had a certain lighting glitch in that one room that made it look like the walls were a different color. You could only get there if you came in through a back tunnel that wasn't on any of the wikis. I asked a guildmate, once, what the room was. He said, "Don't put it on the forums." That was the entire answer. I never put it on the forums.

A friend of mine ran his entire trade economy out of one specific tavern in Hebian-To at server-prime hours, then moved his outpost three zones north for the off-peak. He never told anyone he did this. He didn't have to. The people who needed to find him found him by the time of day. The system worked because it didn't need an explanation.

I think about those servers when I read about modern instance-matched games. The instance match is a clean system. You queue, you get your equal-skill peers, you play. The math is honest and the experience is probably better, on average, than what we had. There is nothing wrong with it.

But you cannot get lonely on an instance match server. You cannot have the four-AM weirdos. There are no rooms that nobody is supposed to find. The texture glitches are patched on day one because there is a bug tracker.

The PvP server you played on at eighteen is not coming back. Some of the people are still alive on Discord. None of the conditions are. The fence is in a different field now. Walk it anyway.
