Chivalry: Medieval Warfare arrived in 2012 from Torn Banner and set the template for first-person medieval melee combat. The directional swing system (overhead, slash, stab, with feints and drag mechanics) was the genre move that War of the Roses and later Mordhau and Chivalry 2 would all answer to. The class kit (Knight, Vanguard, Man-at-Arms, Archer) divided around armor weight and weapon reach, and the Team Objective mode (capture the village, raid the keep, push the cart) gave the format an asymmetric attacker-defender rhythm that the duel servers stripped away for pure 1v1 ladder play. The competitive scene was small and player-run, never a pro scene, but the duelists built a knowledge base around timing, footwork, and weapon matchups that carried into the modern medieval melee community.
