Subspace launched in 1997 after one of the longest betas in online gaming history (the 1995 to 1996 free beta is widely cited as the first massively-played online-only PvP game). Top-down 2D ship combat with gravity-well physics, persistent zones, team flag warfare, turf wars, and clan leagues.

VIE shut down the official servers in 1998, but the community kept the game alive via the Continuum client (a player-developed reverse-engineered server / client suite that has been running zones continuously since 2002). Several zones (Trench Wars, Hyperspace, Death Star Battle) have continuous operational history measured in decades.

Subspace is foundational to online-only PvP: a precursor to MMO PvP design language, a precursor to esports tournament structure (clan leagues with regular schedules), and a precursor to the community-server model that kept games like Quake and CS 1.6 alive long after publishers moved on. The audience is small in 2026 but continuous and informed.
