Diablo II launched in 2000 with a hostile-flag PvP system, public games, and ladder seasonal resets. The dueling culture that grew up around the game (typically in dedicated PvP-focused public games on Battle.net) produced one of the formative ARPG competitive scenes. Diablo II Resurrected, the 2021 remaster, brought the original mechanics to modern hardware and reignited the ladder community. Path of Exile, Last Epoch, and Diablo IV all trace lineage back to D2's PvP framework.
