Quake is where competitive FPS began. The 1996 release of Quake, the QuakeWorld update, Quake II, and Quake III together built the audience and the design language for arena shooters. The duel format, the CPMA movement extensions, the rocket-arena rulesets, and the original CPL and QuakeCon LAN tournaments produced a generation of competitive players who went on to anchor every shooter scene that followed, from Counter-Strike to modern Valorant.
