Sea of Thieves launched in 2018 to a divided reception, then spent five years building one of the most committed PvP audiences in any sandbox. The naval ship-versus-ship combat, the treasure economy, and the shared-world structure produce engagements that are hard to find elsewhere. The PvP-focused Hourglass mode added a competitive ladder, the PS5 release in 2024 expanded the audience, and the game continues to ship meaningful content updates.
